What role do DG sets play in India's power landscape?
Rapid growth in the economy has caused increase in the demand for power. Power cuts can cause a loss in business revenue and hamper functionalities. The major challenge is to provide continuous power. While the power situation is improving and the peak deficit is on a decline, all sectors require reliable standby power through DG sets. We are seeing generator sets move from a continuous duty cycle to more standby usage. What challenges do you face in India? India is one of the most competitive Dollar per kVA markets, though customers are demanding on costs, they do appreciate the value and benefits. The challenge is to rightfully balance the two. Perkins has been a major player in the electric power sector globally and we leverage on this heritage as we serve the customers in India.
How has the technology for DG sets evolved over the years?
Various companies are taking the initiative and improving their R&D to build the best in quality engines. There has been much technological advancement in the recent past to improve the functionality of the DG sets. From being an unregulated market a few years back, India is on a path to become that of one of the stringiest performance norms, creating an environment for technological and design innovation. The markets also demand efficient products with value for money and utility.
What can be done to improve focus on R&D?
Perkins is in a fine position to deliver on its promise as the engine of choice for the power generation market. We leverage our global design capabilities and high performance local teams to deliver solutions in regions we operate.
This combination brings great benefits for the customers. India has the advantage of having engineering and design skills available locally, with our local presence utilising this potential. We have set up our latest factory at Aurangabad - a green field project - to benefit on the local R&D skills.
How can DG sets compete with renewable energy options?
Perkins engines meet all the applicable emissions standards, performance parameters and noise regulations in India and around the world. We have and continue to make investments in our engines, introducing for example innovative products that deliver more power from smaller packages thereby requiring less fuel.
What is your market perspective for India in the next 2-5 years?
The India economy will continue to be one of the fastest growing economies in the world, as customers in all sectors look for reliable quality power. Customers in India are increasingly well informed and will tend to benefit as major global players will offer their solutions locally. While pricing will always be a pressure, we know that customers are moving from just looking at the acquisition costs to a more holistic value for money proposition. Perkins has invested in factories in India to serve customers with world-class products.
