PMI can cater to the indigenisation of fabricated and machined components

K AJAY KUMAR
Managing Director, Power Mech Projects

What are your products catering to the power sector?

Power Mech Industries is so oriented that it is able to provide and facilitate service to thermal and hydro power plants. The facility also extends to renewables, which are likely to be the future of the nation. PMI can cater to the indigenisation of fabricated and machined components for Chinese make equipments, keeping quality standards and durability. The workshop has the built-in capability to develop spares for coal mills, ash handling systems, turbine non-critical parts, high pressure valves, pumps, and fans etc. There is facility for repairing and restoration of steam and hydro turbines of capacity up to 600 MW and 300 MW respectively.

What are your future plans?
The workshop will equip itself to cater to the needs of solar power, by getting the hardware components fabricated and manufactured. India is poised to introduce FGD units in all thermal power plants and we are contemplating manufacturing of non-critical components of Chinese make FGD units to support power plants, as they are experiencing planned and unplanned shut downs, causing huge investments on stacking of large quantity and variety of inventory. The present financial situation is not comfortable to the plant owners for allocating huge funds on this head. Some of the spares may have long stocking period in the stores before being put into use. We intend to bridge this loss making gap substantially by indigenisation of spares with 100 per cent interchangeability and adopting ´repair and use´ concept. This would bring down the operational cost of the power plant while at the same time optimising the plant´s final output.

Kindly share your market strategy with us.
We plan to keep stock of raw materials duly identified by OEMs and also finished parts ready for use. We will identify components that are repeatedly required by the customers and keep stock of same for Just In Time (JIT) delivery. This will ensure huge cost reduction for individual plants in a big way. The information on the spares and their stock position can be shared with interested customers for linkage and advantage.

How do you provide quality and guarantee to customers?
We receive direct support, guidance and technical advice from the OEMs. Therefore we can maintain international quality on priority basis, as OEMs are involved in the process during manufacturing, and they can stand guarantee for material and workmanship.

What is the cost advantage of your products?
The spares are manufactured in India which reduces cost to a great extent. This eliminates processes such as import duties and marine transport, allowing the company to pass the benefit on to the customers. As piece meal attempts, some end-users further indigenise many parts with the support of reputed workshops,. This could be achieved by reverse engineering with the active involvement of technical experts in the field of operation and maintenance. But again there is no guarantee for 100 per cent quality, safety and delivery. The success rate for such reverse engineering process may not be high. It will push the cost of the parts and increase the downtime of units with direct and indirect operational costs.
