More players to be roped in to boost LED bulb sales
Over two years after it started the ‘Hosa Belaku’ scheme to distribute LED lights, the Karnataka government is now planning to rope in more partners to distribute the energy efficient lights. At present, the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), an entity under the Union government, is distributing the lights.

GoI’s UJALA scheme launched in Malaysia
Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under Ministry of Power, Government of India will replicate UJALA in the Malaysian state of Melaka, and extend the programme benefits to people of the region. The scheme was launched by Datuk Seri Utama Ir. Hj. Idris Bin Hj. Haron, Chief Minister of Melaka.

Arunachal Pradesh joins UJALA; entire country now implementing scheme
With the implementation of the GoI’s UJALA programme in Arunachal Pradesh, the world’s largest non-subsidised LED bulb distribution programme is now being implemented across India. The programme is now thus being implemented by EESL, a JV of PSUs under the Ministry of Power, in collaboration with various power discoms in each of the 29 states and seven UTs.

Prices of appliances under UJALA revised post GST
The prices of energy efficient appliances distributed under GoI’s Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All (UJALA) scheme have been revised, owing to the GST roll-out. The 9 W LED bulbs are priced Rs 70, 20 W LED tube lights at Rs 220, and 5-star rated fans will be available at Rs 1,200.

On the Right Track
Globally, 20 per cent of the total generated energy is used for lighting purposes alone. Experts are of the opinion that the said number has to be revoked considering the challenges arising from climate change issues.
