Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on June 9 emphasised once again that looking into power shortage in the state was top priority of the Uttar Pradesh government and at the same time justified the recent hike in power tariff. He attributed the hike to heavy losses in the power sector caused by mismanagement during the previous Bahujan Samaj Party rule.

Officials said the the power shortage was because of low supply to Northern Grid — from where Delhi draws a major portion of its power — due to outage in hydro power plants in Himachal Pradesh. Delhi was short of 250 mw of power from the Agra-Gwalior grid line, officials said.

As scarcity of coal continued to haunt electricity generation, India witnessed a peak power shortage of over 9,000 mw in April this year. Peak power deficit, or shortage in electricity supply when the demand is at its highest, stood at 6.9 per cent or 9,020 mw in the month of April, according to latest data by the Central Electricity Autority (CEA).
