BHEL wins 2,400 MW project
In a surprise win, PSU giant BHEL has emerged the lowest bidder in the tender to build a 2,400 MW joint NTPC-Jharkhand government plant, beating Larsen & Toubro and Korea's Doosan. Estimated at around Rs 14,000 crore, it included EPC of 3x800 MW coal-fired plant and the Patratu Thermal Power Station.
Problem of Plenty
India has become a power surplus nation, albeit with certain caveats. In its wake, it has changed the whole paradigm of generation sources, with solar and wind hogging the spotlight and coal being relegated a bit.
On the Right Track
Globally, 20 per cent of the total generated energy is used for lighting purposes alone. Experts are of the opinion that the said number has to be revoked considering the challenges arising from climate change issues.
NTPC at the forefront of India’s global energy transition
A new report released by the Energy Finance Studies Australasia at Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) details how NTPC is poised to facilitate India’s drive toward ambitious national renewable energy targets and is leading the global energy transition.
Boost for solar power generation at NTPC
100 kWp solar plant commissioned at Kayamkulam unit
Solar power generation at the Kayamkulam unit of NTPC Ltd. has added a new dimension to the power scenario in Kerala, as a floating solar plant producing 100 kWp of power, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the country, was commissioned there recently.
In the past five years, coal power made up over two-thirds of capacity additions in India's generation, and currently accounts for more than 60 per cent of India's power capacity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India's coal demand will see the biggest growth over the next five years, despite a global slowdown.
Coal demand will be fully met from domestic source in 5 yrs
In order to meet the coal demand in next five years, Coal India Ltd, the main coal producer, has an ambitious plan of increasing its production to one billon tonnes by FY2019-20. CIL's production is showing an increasing trend, having gone up from 494 Mt in FY15 to 554 Mt in FY17.
