UDAY will take 4-5 years to turnaround power discoms
The growth in power demand accelerated significantly in the current financial year. UDAY is certainly a key contributor to this because the immediate savings in cost (the restructuring plan, on an estimated basis, reduced interest costs by as much as 47 paise per kWh), allowed utilities to maintain tariffs at lower levels, thus attracting more marginal consumers.
Blackouts under control
Just think of power going off while an important surgery is taking place in a hospital and it will not get back for a day or two. The kind of disruption an electricity blackout arising from grid collapse can cause is enormous for different people at various places. Grid collapse is the worst-case scenario for any transmission utility too.
