The power sector, over a period of six months, has witnessed large scale investments in the power generation segment leading to an increase in the installed capacity to 329 GW as on September 30, 2017 from 132 GW as on March 31, 2007.

Millions of Indians are yet to see the light of the day, without electricity connection. Pace of demand growth is far behind that of supply. The fossil fuels are being relegated and renewable sources are inducted in a big way.

Despite the Centre's thrust to renewable energy, state governments are not an active party to the renewable energy wave. If the Centre and states collaborate, things would be easier for achieving targets.

One, minimising the transportation constraints, so rake availability and coal supply is ensured. The second is better co-ordination.

Though weak logistics support and lack of preparedness of power plants are to be blamed for the recent coal shortage at power plants, the crisis could have been avoided with better co-ordination among stakeholders.

Hydropower segment has been facing numerous impediments to its growth. However, it has come into the government focus exudes hope that it will pick up pace going ahead.

India has celebrated its moment under the sun when a few months back the then power minister announced that it has turned surplus in power supply. Though the statement has its share of ifs and buts, significant improvement in coal production was the reason for this.
