The wind energy sector has progressed significantly over the past decade. The installed capacity of the country has doubled in the last five years and reached a whopping 32,508 MW which is almost ~56 per cent of our installed renewable energy base.

The good news is that solar power tariff has fallen 80 per cent over the last seven years. Then by all rational expectations, it should have been a celebration time for the government, solar power producers, power sector ecosystem and the consumers.

With an aim to further strengthen its commitment towards attaining a ‘New World of Energy’ that is more efficient, sustainable, reliable and connected, Schneider Electric, brought-forth the massive opportunities that can be leveraged through ‘digitisation of power distribution’, and presented its digital architecture, EcoStruxureTM Grid.

The Indian solar market added 1,869 MW in the second quarter of 2017, bringing installations in the first half of the year to 4,765 MW (surpassing the 4,313 MW installed in all of 2016), according to the latest India Solar Market Update released by Mercom India Research.

India Ratings and Research’s (Ind-Ra) initial assessment of UDAY scheme suggests that both financial outcome [gap between average cost of supply (ACS) and average revenue realisation (ARR)) and operational efficiency (decline in aggregate technical and commercial losses (AT&C)] have improved at an aggregate level.

Formulating policies is only the first step, the success of smart grids depends on the time-bound implementation of projects. Technology enabled systems and solutions have become the driving force for electricity segment in the last few year.

The 14 smart grid pilot projects were allotted in 2012. However, none of the 14 projects could be completed till date. Sadly, four of these projects have been cancelled.
