"The wind sector turnaround will start in 2019-20"
In an interview, DV Giri, Secretary General, Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association said that in 2018-19 with the dependence on the SECI bids that have an 18 months project period, and bids from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra will see the installation of around 2,000-2,500 MW in FY19, further adding that the turnaround will start from 2019-20 and the future is good for the industry.

We need strong transmission lines for wind
The policy from the beginning has articulated that there will be unwind or sunset of all the subsidy elements. And, that has been consistent. Some of them were given sunset in the last budget, while some have continued.

Gearing up for 80 GW and beyond
Wind dominates the renewable energy (RE) segment with an installed capacity of over 34,000 MW. The segment, which was once the leader in RE, may lose its sheen as grid-connected solar energy may take over wind in the coming years

Financial institutes cast doubts on the viability of projects
The target is achievable if you look at the wind potential and the capabilities of the wind turbine manufacturers, who can manufacture the machines and develop the workforce to execute the project. If you take that as a benchmark, then it is achievable.

India's first wind tender oversubscribed despite off-take uncertainties | BTI
Earlier this month, SECI received bids for India’s first wind power tender. There are two unique aspects of this tender – i) successful bidders will sign 25-PPAs with PTC India Limited, which will sign back-to-back PPAs with as yet unknown discoms; and ii) existing operational projects and/or under construction projects are eligible to participate.

Realising the potential
With truckloads of untreated waste being generated daily, while the country is struggling to achieve consistent power supply to all, waste-to-energy seems to be a bright proposition. However, awareness and implementation remain major constraints.

We require growth in the intra and inter-state electricity grids
The RE sector has grown at over 10 per cent per annum over the last two years, driven majorly by the wind sector accounting for 4,300 MW new installations, followed by solar installations of around 1,900 MW in the same period.
