The Tamil Nadu state government has denied permission to the Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEECL) to proceed with their Coal Bed Methane (CBM) extraction project, after accepting the report submitted by the technical experts´ committee constituted, under the chairmanship of the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), to study the impact of the project on environment, sea water intrusion, food security and livelihood of farmers in Cauvery delta region.

Tamil Nadu farmers are sceptical whether solar-powered pumpsets would be able to draw water beyond a depth of 50-60 ft (20 metres at the most). Besides, the quantum of water required for irrigation may not be pumped, said Mahadhanapuram V Rajaram, working president of the Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association. This would be quite useful between 10 am and 4 pm and the quantum being pumped would gradually decline thereafter, he added.

This is a first-of-its-kind dedicated feeder line to provide electricity to farmers in Bihar, the government said. When it realised, millions of farms in power-starved Bihar will be benefitted.
