Union Coal Ministry serves notices on 32 firms

The Union Coal Ministry is learnt to have issued show-cause notices to 32 companies for their failure to carry out any substantial progress in the development of the coal blocks allocated to them. Officials in the Coal Ministry said that coal blocks, which have been issued show-cause notices, include those belonging to the Tata group, Jindal Steel and Power and Jayaswal group.

Govt asks CIL to sign supply pacts with power firms

The Union Coal Ministry has asked Coal India (CIL) to sign fuel supply pacts with the power generation companies, including NTPC, before finalising power purchase agreements with them. The Coal Ministry has directed CIL to sign Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) with power companies, including NTPC, without waiting for PPAs (power purchase agreements), sources said.

The Union Coal Ministry has conveyed to an Inter-Ministerial panel that it would not be possible to provide fossil fuel to power plants having an aggregate capacity of 16,000 mw due to coal shortages. Sources said that the Coal Ministry is of the view that due to coal shortages it would not provide linkages to those power plants having an aggregate capacity of 16,000 mw, which are at advanced stages of commissioning, a source close to the development said.

The Union Finance Ministry has asked the Coal Ministry to prioritise supplies to power projects that are stuck due to unavailability of coal to ensure that loans to such projects do not become non-performing assets. The move comes at a time when projects worth around Rs 5.39 lakh crore are stuck in the power sector.

CIL production target set 4% higher at 482 mt

The Union Coal Ministry has set a production target of 482 million tonne for Coal India (CIL) for 2013-14. This is four per cent higher than the production target of 464.1 mt set by the nodal Ministry for the State-owned miner in 2012-13.
