Clouds around coal
Coal plays an essential role in our global energy mix, particularly in India and the developing world through electricity generation. This fossil fuel has gained prominence due to its availability in abundance in the bowels of earth, lack of disastrous impact like nuclear plants do, and favourable economics it continues to enjoy in power generation
RE focus do not signal move away from coal
Currently, renewable energy costs are generally higher than that of fossil-based and nuclear energy. In addition to this, unlike well-established conventional designs and technologies, the advancement in different RE technologies still requires substantial investments and research and development
Recharging Power Plants
With the government upping the targets for energy generation and the nation´s power demands constantly on the rise, Renovation & Modernization (R&M) of existing power plants seems to be the most cost-effective way of augmenting India´s generation capacity.
Smart city projects will constitute smart fuel to generate power
Central Electricity Authority (CEA), government of India, has identified and listed many power plants for performance optimisation and R&M programs to be carried out in the 12th Five-Year Plan. Now it the decision of respective State gencos to issue tender either for comprehensive R&M or need-based R&M.
Repowering power plants
In the current scenario where India is facing acute power shortage and setting up greenfield plants involves large investment and long gestation period, maintenance, renovation and modernisation of the existing power plants is considered the best option.
