Electricity forms an integral part of the utilities which currently contribute nearly 2.02 per cent to Asia's third largest economy. The nation's power sector has long been grappling with grim infrastructure and ageing transmission - woes that have debilitated the nation's economic health.
India has always had a large rural economy with most of the people eking out their living from these areas and as such, since independence successive governments have tried to improve rural infrastructure, including that of power connectivity.
Enlightening rural India
Until now, Rural Electrification Corporation has electrified nearly 17,000 villages and has provided free electricity connections to more than 2.16 crore BPL households. REC is a nodal agency for the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), a flagship scheme of the Government of India.
