The wind sector, in the last two years, has not seen much traction due to various reasons. And because of the recent cancellation of auctions in various states, the year will pass with a no-show from the sector that had earlier added 34 GW of capacity.

A former finance secretary and now as a Member Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and Principal Advisor-Niti Aayog, Ratan Watal believes that the handling of battery waste is a challenge and India must regulate the recycling market in the country to reap its benefit.

In an interview, DV Giri, Secretary General, Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association said that in 2018-19 with the dependence on the SECI bids that have an 18 months project period, and bids from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra will see the installation of around 2,000-2,500 MW in FY19, further adding that the turnaround will start from 2019-20 and the future is good for the industry.

India's concentration was on thermal capacity addition, which suddenly shifted to RE. Give us an overview of what is happening in the power sector as a whole.

Throw some light on the major challenges faced by the wind segment. For the wind segment, bidding was a completely new arena. When bids were introduced, the industry was not mature enough to quote the right tariffs or measure the risks. As a result, the initial bids faced multiple challenges.
