India is a substantially large market for LED lighting products and, aided by government initiatives and its unique demographic advantages, the country will continue to expand at a healthy rate over the next few years, Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power Co tells POWER TODAY in this exclusive interaction.

India's streetlights form a crucial component of the nation's investment in lighting and road safety. Launched in 2015, EESL's street light national programme (SNLP) has been instrumental in retrofitting over 6.1 million conventional street lights with LEDs in 941 municipalities across 28 states and union territories in the country.

Although state discoms have managed to leverage UDAY by paring financial losses from Rs.51,589.51 crore in FY16 to Rs.34,826.87 in FY17, a marginal decrease in AT&C losses seems to be the bone of contention, as what has been envisaged has not been achieved yet, barring bailing-out non-performers.

Over two years after it started the ‘Hosa Belaku’ scheme to distribute LED lights, the Karnataka government is now planning to rope in more partners to distribute the energy efficient lights. At present, the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), an entity under the Union government, is distributing the lights.

Chandigarh electricity department is reaping the benefits of government schemes and reforms in the power sector. The energy saving appliances distributed under the Unnat Jyoti Affordable LEDs for All (Ujala) scheme of the Central government have helped the department save around Rs 25 crore power in addition to cutting down about 40, 688 tonnes of carbon emissions in one year, as per data of Union ministry of power.

Energy efficiency has been on the agenda of governments and industry across the world over the last several decades.
