The wind sector, in the last two years, has not seen much traction due to various reasons. And because of the recent cancellation of auctions in various states, the year will pass with a no-show from the sector that had earlier added 34 GW of capacity.

Combining renewable energies like wind, solar, biomass and small hydro resources, India is using only 7 per cent of it. The cumulative renewable power installed capacity in December 2017 was 62.8 GW while in March 2018, it reached 69.5 GW.

A recent study has claimed that India would overtake China by a wide margin to become the world's leader in renewable energy by 2050.

Growth in storage solutions like batteries will facilitate 50 per cent of the global electricity supply from wind and solar by 2050,' predicts Shantanu Jaiswal, Head of India Research, Bloomberg NEF and one of the authors of New Energy Outlook (NEO) 2018 report.

Given the amount of auctions rolled out currently and the expected future auctions for wind, and with the industry's manufacturing prowess, we can confidently say that the currently-set target of 60 GW can be achieved.
