The recent decision of allowing states to import coal which was drawn by the Union Power Ministry is temporary in nature, informed Piyush Goyal, Coal Minister. He further confirmed that there has been a steady growth in coal production and dispatches by Coal India. However, there may be a requirement of importing coal in order to stop-gap arrangement for states to meet a sudden rise in demand. Coal production had registered a 15.2 per cent growth during the first quarter ended June 2018 to 136.87 million tonne and supply to power plants also jumped by 15.4 per cent to 122.84 million tonne during the quarter. This resulted in lower coal imports by the power industry by nearly 15 per cent during April- May this year.
