The Hyderabad-based company will initially run the plant making short-term coal purchase arrangements. Thereafter, the coal will be sourced from Tokisud and Seregarh coal mines located in Jharkhand, he said. The company had to face some hurdles before taking up coal mining projects, he explained. The project has a power purchase agreement with Punjab State Utility for 25 years.
GVK Power & Infrastructure has signed up to develop a 2x660-mw thermal power project at the same location in the phase II, taking the installed capacity to 1,860 mw. However, the execution of the second phase of the project hinges on the fuel linkage, applications for which have already been made.
